Nothing on a TOEIC Score Report Says Passed or Failed
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is reported from 10 to 990, and there is no line on the report that judges it. So a good TOEIC score is not one number: it is 785 if you are finishing an engineering degree in France, 800 if you are up for promotion in Tokyo, 550 if you are clearing a graduation rule in Bangkok.

TOEIC Score Calculator: Turn Raw Answers Into a 990-Scale Estimate
Your score report never tells you how many questions you got right. Each section produces a raw score out of 100, which becomes a scaled score between 5 and 495; the two are added. Move the sliders to see where a given number of correct answers lands.
Scaled: 360 / 495

Estimated total TOEIC score
Working proficiency. A common graduation minimum and entry-level application benchmark.
An estimate, deliberately labeled as one. Read the next section before quoting the number to anybody.
How the TOEIC Score Is Actually Calculated
One raw point per correct answer; nothing deducted for a wrong one. That rule beats most study advice: never leave a blank. On a four-option item a guess is worth 25%, a blank zero.
Each section gives a raw score out of 100. ETS converts each to a scaled score between 5 and 495, then adds the two for a total from 10 to 990 in five-point steps. The conversion is not a percentage and not a textbook lookup: ETS uses an equating table specific to each test form, and does not publish it.
Equating keeps a 720 in October worth the same as a 720 in March when one paper ran harder. It also means nobody outside ETS knows the mapping for your form, and two forms can differ by 20 to 30 points at the same raw score. Read 685 as "roughly 660 to 710", and distrust any TOEIC score conversion table that gives a precise figure without saying so. What transfers from practice to test day is the shape, not the total: a 685 with Part 7 at 58% and Part 1 at 92% tells you where next week goes.
What Is the Maximum TOEIC Score?
The maximum TOEIC Listening and Reading score is 990, 495 for Listening plus 495 for Reading, the top of each section's 5–495 range. There is no score above it, and the scale does not extend to a CEFR C2 judgment. The full TOEIC score range runs from 10 at the bottom to 990 at the top, in five-point steps, so 987 or 991 is not a number anyone receives.
A full score of 990 does not always require 200 correct answers. Because each form is equated separately, some forms award 495 in a section with one or two items missed and others do not, which is the same reason nobody outside ETS can promise you a mapping. Treat 990 as the ceiling of the scale rather than a count of perfect answers.
Is There a TOEIC Pass Mark? And How Long Is a Score Valid?
TOEIC has no pass or fail. The report shows Listening, Reading, a total, and descriptors of what test-takers at that level can typically do. Whoever asked for the score sets the bar, which is why the figure you were given ranges from 550 to 900.
ETS gives a reported score two years of validity. Plenty of institutions are stricter and want one issued within the last 12 months, so read the wording of your requirement. TOEIC score validity catches people out every year.
TOEIC Score Levels: The Band Chart, CEFR Mapping and What Each One Opens
Five bands cover the whole scale. The CEFR mapping is the one part of this chart that is standardized; the outcomes column is what those bands are used for in practice, and it varies by institution.

TOEIC to CEFR, Skill by Skill
ETS publishes a CEFR alignment giving the minimum scaled score for each level in each skill. Listening and Reading run 5–495 each; Speaking and Writing, a separate test, run 0–200. Alignment guidelines rather than hard cut scores, and TOEIC does not measure at C2.
| CEFR level | Listening | Reading | Speaking | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 490 | 455 | 180 | 180 |
| B2 | 400 | 385 | 160 | 150 |
| B1 | 275 | 275 | 120 | 120 |
| A2 | 110 | 115 | 90 | 70 |
| A1 | 60 | 60 | 50 | 30 |
✓ Reviewed July 26, 2026 Source: ETS, Mapping the TOEIC Tests on the CEFR (PDF). ETS presents these as expert standard-setting guidelines and explicitly does not recommend rigid cut scores. This is how you can sit at B2 on Reading and B1 on Listening with a total that reads as a clean B2, which matters where a requirement is written per section.
What Is a Good TOEIC Score in France, Japan and Thailand?
These are the figures cited most often, not universal rules. Each is set by an individual school, ministry or employer, and they move. Find the number your own institution published; use this table to judge whether the number you were given is normal.
| Where | Commonly cited score | Why that number exists | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| France Grandes écoles, engineering | 785 | Accreditation practice for engineering diplomas made one figure near-universal | B2 |
| Japan & Korea Large employers | ~800 | Hiring screens, promotion gates and eligibility for overseas posting; ~730 as a mid-tier bar | B2 |
| Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia Universities | 550–600 | Graduation requirements and graduate-program application floors | B1 |
| Taiwan Public sector, large corporates | 750+ | Published grade bands for civil-service and corporate English requirements | B2 |

France: Why 785 Is the Number Everyone Quotes
France generates more English-language searching about TOEIC scores than any other country, and 785 is the reason. French engineering schools and grandes écoles very commonly make a certified B2-level score a condition of awarding the diploma, and the accreditation framework engineering programs work within, the CTI, or Commission des Titres d'Ingénieur, is why the figure is so consistent between schools. Some accept a different certificate, a lower figure with conditions, or a minimum per section, so check the règlement your own school published this year.
Japan and Korea: 800 as an HR Instrument
Here the score is an employment document, not an academic one. Large employers commonly treat a TOEIC 800 as the bar for graduate hiring, promotion into internationally exposed roles and eligibility for an overseas posting; around 730 recurs as an internal mid-tier threshold. These are HR standards, not national rules, so if your employer publishes a table, that table wins.
Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia: 550 to 600 as a Gate to Finish
The most common use of TOEIC across these three is a graduation requirement or a graduate-application floor, and 550 to 600 clears a great many of them. The target sits mid-scale, so it is usually reachable through pacing work and Parts 2 and 5 rather than a year of vocabulary building. Programs taught in English often set higher figures.
Taiwan: Bands Rather Than Single Numbers
Taiwanese public-sector and large-corporate requirements tend to be expressed as bands, and the ones that matter for professional roles cluster around 750 and above. The same organization may apply a lower band to internal staff than to external hires.
What a TOEIC Score Does Not Tell Anyone
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test measures receptive English: whether you can understand a voicemail about a delayed shipment and find a figure on an invoice. It says nothing about whether you can chair a meeting or write a reply to an annoyed client, because you never produce a word of English during it.
That gap is why some employers ask for TOEIC Speaking & Writing as well. It is a separate test, scored 0–200 for Speaking and 0–200 for Writing. A requirement stated as one number, 700, 785, 800, means Listening and Reading. If it mentions productive skills or gives two numbers, check before you book. Our Speaking & Writing guide has the question types and scoring.
How Much Can You Raise a TOEIC Score, Realistically?
About 100 points in four to eight weeks is realistic for someone working consistently on the right things. That second clause carries the weight: ten more full tests show you the same total ten times, while drilling the two parts actually losing you points moves it.
Part 5 holds the cheapest 30 points, half its items turn on word form and part of speech, each decidable in twenty seconds once you look at what follows the blank. Part 2 comes next, because nothing is printed and most losses come from expecting a direct answer when the reply is indirect. Part 7 is where most points are lost, 54 questions surrendered to the clock more than to comprehension, but it takes longest to fix, so do it second. The format guide has the pacing budget; a timed practice test tells you which two parts are yours.
Why Every TOEIC Score Converter Is an Estimate
Publishing a confident-looking conversion table would rank about as well and read better. It would also be a fabrication, because the table governing your form is not public.

What This Page and This Product Cannot Do
- We cannot convert a raw score exactly. The converter models the 5–495 band; it is not an ETS equating table. Read any output as a range of 20 to 30 points, and remember that only a real sitting produces a score you can show anybody.
- We cannot give you an official score. Every number here is a projection from practice, and only a real ETS sitting produces a result you can show an employer.
- Our questions are not official papers. All 6,787 Listening & Reading items, 3,099 Listening and 3,688 Reading, are written by our team in ETS style, and so are the Speaking & Writing tasks. Retired official forms come from ETS alone.
How Do You Interpret Your TOEIC Results?
Read the two section scores, not the total. Each half carries 100 questions and converts to the same range, so the Listening score 5-495 and the Reading score 5-495 are directly comparable to one another.
Section balance is the diagnostic. A gap wider than about 50 points points at one specific weakness rather than a general level problem. Most candidates sit lower on Reading, and time pressure explains it far more often than comprehension does. That pairing is your score profile.
| Section | Questions | Time | Score range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 100 | 45 minutes | 5-495 |
| Reading | 100 | 75 minutes | 5-495 |
| Total | 200 | 2 hours | 10-990 |
Is There a National Average TOEIC Score?
There is no single global average TOEIC score. ETS publishes averages by country, and they differ widely. A national average from one market tells you almost nothing about another.
Country data varies with who sits the test rather than with national ability. Where employers require the TOEIC of every graduate hire, the score distribution pulls one way; where only motivated candidates sit it, it pulls the other. Treat any average as a weak benchmark, and compare yourself against the threshold your target organization publishes instead. ETS data is useful context, not a target.
What Level Is a TOEIC Score of 900 or 945?
A TOEIC score of 900 sits at the top of CEFR B2 and a score of 945 crosses into CEFR C1, the highest level the Listening and Reading test measures. Those 45 points cover more ground than they look.
What separates them is not grammar. By TOEIC 900 the recurring grammar patterns answer themselves, and the remaining marks come from speed and from low-frequency vocabulary. TOEIC 945 asks you to hold that accuracy while finishing Part 7 comfortably.
Very few organizations require this top score band. Candidates who chase near-native results are usually doing it for a specific overseas posting or a specialist role, not to clear a published bar. Worth knowing too: the score ceiling arrives quickly above 950, where a handful of items separates one sitting from the next.
How the TOEIC Score Compares With IELTS and TOEFL
No official concordance exists between the TOEIC and either the IELTS or the TOEFL. Any score comparison you meet is CEFR mediated: each test publishes its own CEFR mapping, and the comparison happens at level, not at point. Treat the conversion table below as an approximation and never as an ETS conversion.
| CEFR level | TOEIC L&R | IELTS band | TOEFL iBT |
|---|---|---|---|
| B1 | 550-780 | 4.0-5.0 | roughly 42-71 |
| B2 | 785-940 | 5.5-6.5 | roughly 72-94 |
| C1 | 945-990 | 7.0-8.0 | roughly 95-120 |

How Long a TOEIC Score Stays Valid
Two years is the headline, and it is the part people get wrong most often: the score does not stop existing, the institution stops accepting it.
How Long Are TOEIC Scores Valid?
Two years from the test date. That is the working answer, and the clock starts the day you sit the test, not the day your score report reaches you.
The figure comes from an ETS recommendation echoed by its national administrators. It rests on a simple assumption: unused language ability shifts measurably over roughly that period, so an older result predicts current performance less well.
The validity period is a recommendation rather than a technical limit. Whoever asks for your score sets the recency rule they actually enforce, and that distinction decides almost everything else on this page.
Do TOEIC Scores Expire?
No, a TOEIC score is not deleted or canceled after two years. It simply stops being accepted by organizations that enforce a recency window.
Scores do not expire in any technical sense, and nothing changes on the ETS side at the two-year mark. Your score record persists, and within a defined retention period a reissue of an old report may still be possible. What changes is on your side: a recruiter or admissions office starts asking for something more recent.
Acceptance, then, is the real subject. An institutional rule decides whether a three-year-old 820 counts. Some read it without comment. Others reject it on the date, whatever the number says.
Is the TOEIC Valid for Life?
No, no TOEIC result is treated as a lifetime qualification, and any provider claiming otherwise is describing the document rather than its acceptance.
The confusion has an obvious source. Candidates look at the certificate, find no printed expiry anywhere on it, and conclude the score is permanent. The document genuinely does not expire; the willingness of institutions to accept it does.
Work to a practical rule instead of chasing the theory of lifetime validity. Treat any score older than two years as unusable for a formal requirement until the specific institution tells you otherwise. The two-year rule is the default assumption everywhere it matters.
What Is the Score Report Delivery Date?
The delivery date matters when a deadline is close. Online results usually appear within a few days of your test date, while the paper report follows by post and takes noticeably longer.
Count backwards from the date the institution needs the report in hand, not from your test date. That single habit prevents the most common scheduling failure: a valid score that arrives a week after the application closes.
| Result format | Typical delivery | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|
| Online score report | A few days after the test | Checking your result and quoting it in an application |
| Official paper report | Two to three weeks by post | Formal submission where a physical document is required |
| Institutional result | Released to the organizing body first | Internal placement, promotion files and cohort tracking |
Can You Retake the TOEIC?
Yes, you may retake the TOEIC as often as you wish, and each sitting produces its own separate score report. There is no attempt limit anywhere in the program.
There is no averaging across attempts, and a new report carries no record of earlier ones. That means a retake replaces nothing: you simply choose which report to submit.
Timing is where the decision actually sits. Candidates renewing an expiring score usually book two to three months before their deadline, which leaves room for delivery and for one repeat attempt if the first falls short. Plan the renewal around that window rather than around the expiry date itself.
Do Employers Accept an Old TOEIC Score?
Acceptance is decided by whoever reads your score, and practice varies far more than the two-year convention suggests. Three patterns recur. Strict two-year windows dominate corporate hiring. Competitive selection processes often tighten to twelve months. Internal records frequently carry no stated limit at all.
A lapsed score keeps informal value even where it fails a formal test. It still evidences a level you once reached, which matters in an internal conversation if not on an application form. The safest move is always to ask the institution directly rather than infer from the convention. Employer acceptance is institutional policy, not an ETS rule.
- Corporate hiring — usually two years, applied as a hard filter at the screening stage before anyone reads your CV.
- Competitive selection — often twelve months, because the shortlist depends on comparing candidates measured at similar times.
- Internal promotion records — frequently no stated limit, since the employer already holds the result on file.
- Academic admission — two years, sometimes stricter where the program starts a year after application.
- Diploma award requirements — set by the school, and occasionally satisfied by any result achieved during the course.
Is 700 TOEIC Good?
A TOEIC total of 700 sits in the upper B1 range: solid, but below the 785 mark most institutions publish. It clears entry-level expectations and misses the standard corporate threshold.
For a candidate renewing an expiring 700, targeted Reading work pays better than a straight re-sit. The gap to 785 is roughly 17 correct answers, and at this level most of them are sitting in Part 7 questions that ran out of time. A renewal is worth pairing with four to six weeks of pacing practice. Our TOEIC score guide sets out what each band unlocks.
How Long Is a TOEIC Certificate Valid?
The colored TOEIC certificate carries no expiry date, but it follows the same two-year convention as the score report it reflects. The document outlasts its usefulness.
Keep the distinction clear. The certificate is a display document; the Score Report is the official record institutions recognize. Any verification request is answered against the report, so the certificate's age never decides anything. Candidates who frame the certificate and lose the report create a genuine problem for themselves. Our TOEIC overview explains how the two documents differ.
Should You Retake the TOEIC Before Your Score Expires?
Retake early only if you have a known deadline. Otherwise a fresh result starts its own two-year clock from the new test date, and you have spent a fee to move the window a few months.
Treat retake timing as scheduling rather than study. A booking window two to three months ahead of the deadline leaves room for report delivery and for one repeat attempt if the first result disappoints. Booking any later removes both safety nets at once. Our TOEIC preparation guide covers how much a short run-up can realistically move.
Which CEFR Level Does Your TOEIC Score Still Prove?
A lapsed score still documents the CEFR level you reached, even where an institution will not accept it as current evidence. Those are two different claims, and only one of them expires.
Score stability is reassuring here. Candidates who re-sit after a lapse usually land close to their previous result, unless they have had no English exposure in the interval. Treat the level reached as a reliable baseline for planning a re-sit rather than starting from scratch. Our TOEIC to CEFR guide maps each band in full.
TOEIC Score Questions People Ask First
What is a good TOEIC score?
There is no universal answer, because there is no pass mark. 785 is the most commonly required figure worldwide and marks the start of CEFR B2; French engineering schools and grandes écoles frequently set it for graduation. Employers in Japan and Korea commonly ask for around 800, and 550 to 600 clears many university requirements in Southeast Asia. 945 and above is CEFR C1, the highest level this test measures.
What is the maximum TOEIC score?
990: 495 for Listening plus 495 for Reading. The minimum is 10, because each section starts at 5 rather than 0. Totals are reported in five-point increments, so a TOEIC 990 needs near-perfect accuracy rather than literally every answer correct.
How is the TOEIC score calculated from correct answers?
One raw point per correct answer, with no penalty for a wrong one, so never leave a blank. Each section's raw score out of 100 becomes a scaled score between 5 and 495 via an equating table specific to your test form, and the two are added for a total from 10 to 990.
Why do TOEIC score conversion tables disagree with each other?
Because ETS does not publish the equating tables, and each test form has its own. Every third-party TOEIC score conversion chart, including the calculator here, is a model rather than a lookup, and two forms can differ by 20 to 30 points at the same raw score.
Is there a passing TOEIC score?
No. The report shows Listening, Reading and a total, with no pass or fail anywhere on it. The threshold comes from whoever asked you for the score, which is why the number you were given might be 550, 785, 800 or 900.
How long is a TOEIC score valid?
ETS gives a reported score two years of validity. Many institutions are stricter and want a certificate issued within the last 12 months, so read the exact wording of your requirement.
How does TOEIC map to CEFR levels?
On the total scale, 945 and above corresponds to C1, 785 to 944 to B2, 550 to 784 to B1 and 225 to 549 to A2. ETS also publishes minimum scaled scores per skill, which is how you can sit at B2 on Reading and B1 on Listening with a total that reads as B2. TOEIC does not measure at C2.
How many points can I gain, and how fast?
About 100 points in four to eight weeks is realistic with consistent, targeted work. Targeting beats volume: Parts 5 and 2 are the cheapest points on the test, while Part 7 is where most points are lost, usually to pacing rather than comprehension.
