What Is the CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference is a six-level scale describing what a language learner can do. The Council of Europe published it, and it now underpins most language requirements in Europe and beyond.

Its six bands run A1 to C2, in the order A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. Each is written as can-do descriptors, meaning statements about tasks a learner can complete rather than counts of correct answers.

That design makes the level scale test-neutral. Several different exams map onto the same bands, which is exactly why institutions state requirements in CEFR terms and leave you to convert your own score.

What CEFR Level Is My TOEIC Score?

Find your total score in the conversion table below. The ETS mapping table for the Listening and Reading test is the source worth citing, rather than a third-party grid.

Two cautions before you read across. The mapping applies to the Listening and Reading total, and Speaking, Writing and Bridge each carry their own separate mapping. Some institutions also apply a Listening minimum and a Reading minimum alongside the total, so a lopsided score can miss a CEFR level it appears to reach.

What TOEIC Score Do You Need for CEFR B2?

You need a TOEIC Listening and Reading total of 785 to evidence CEFR B2, with minimum sub-scores in each section. That total score comes with a section minimum near 400 for Listening and 385 for Reading.

B2 is the level that matters most in practice. Corporate recruiters, engineering schools and business schools all set it as their default, which makes 785 the most quoted institutional requirement on the whole scale.

The threshold hides one trap. Because 785 is a total, an uneven split can clear the number while failing the level. A candidate at 450 Listening and 335 Reading has 785 but misses the Reading minimum, and an institution checking both figures will say no.

What Does Each CEFR Level Mean in Practice?

Official descriptors are written for teachers, not candidates. Translated into workplace tasks, the five levels the TOEIC reaches look like this.

• A1 beginner — isolated words and set phrases. You recognize a name on a notice but cannot follow the notice itself.
• A2 elementary — simple routine exchanges. You handle a short predictable email and a scripted phone greeting.
• B1 intermediate — familiar work topics, with effort. You follow a meeting on your own subject and lose the asides.
• B2 upper intermediate — fluent enough for most professional work. You run workplace tasks in English without needing support.
• C1 advanced — complex, nuanced and near-effortless. You catch implication, tone and disagreement in fast discussion.

Which TOEIC Score Level Is C2?

No TOEIC Listening and Reading score corresponds to CEFR C2, because the test maps only to A1 through C1. There is no score level to quote, and nothing in the 990 range reaches it.

The reason is design, not modesty. The test's items stop discriminating reliably above C1, so ETS makes no C2 claim. That C1 ceiling is a mapping limit built into the instrument.

Two consequences follow. If a role or program demands documented C2 proficiency, a Listening and Reading result cannot satisfy it, and you need a different assessment. And any third-party conversion chart showing a C2 row is inventing it. That single row is the most common error on free conversion pages.

How Do TOEIC, IELTS and TOEFL Compare on the CEFR?

No official concordance links these three tests. Each publishes its own CEFR mapping, so the only defensible comparison is CEFR-mediated: convert each score to a level, then compare levels. Read the comparison table as approximate, and never quote it as an ETS or British Council conversion.

What CEFR Level Do Business Schools Require?

Institutions anchor on CEFR rather than on a raw number because it lets them accept several tests against one rule. In practice the requirement clusters tightly. A B2 requirement covers admission and graduation at most business schools and engineering schools, while C1 appears on international tracks and MBA selection.

France offers the clearest worked example. Grandes ecoles commonly require 785, following the Commission des titres d'ingenieur recommendation of a B2+ standard, and some withhold the diploma until a student meets it. Requirements move, so verify the institution's current published rule rather than a blog table.

• Business school admission — B2, checked at application and occasionally re-checked before enrollment.
• Degree award or graduation — B2, with the diploma withheld until the score is filed.
• International track programs — B2 to C1, since teaching and assessment run entirely in English.
• MBA selection — C1, because case discussion demands fast comprehension under pressure.
• Partner university exchange — varies, often B2, and set by the receiving institution rather than your own.
• Corporate graduate hiring — B2, the same bar recruiters apply outside education.

What TOEIC Score Is CEFR B2 Level?

A TOEIC Listening and Reading total of 785 is the standard CEFR B2 equivalent. It is the single most searched conversion on this topic.

Watch the section minimum alongside the total score. Institutions that check both will read your Listening and Reading figures separately, and a strong Listening score cannot always rescue a weak Reading one. Is a TOEIC 750 a B2 Score?

No, a TOEIC total of 750 falls just short of B2, which begins at 785. The B2 threshold is fixed, and a near miss counts as a miss on any institutional form.

The score gap is narrower than it feels: about 35 points, or roughly seven additional correct answers across the whole test. Candidates sitting at 750 usually close it through Reading timing rather than through new study, because the marks are sitting in Part 7 questions they never reached. Which TOEIC Score Reaches CEFR C1?

A TOEIC Listening and Reading total of about 945 and above corresponds to CEFR C1, the highest level the test maps to. That is the top band on the whole scale.

One qualification matters here. C1 on this test evidences advanced receptive skills only, since Listening and Reading assess comprehension rather than production. What Is the TOEIC Equivalent in Other Tests?

Through the CEFR, a TOEIC 785 sits near IELTS 5.5-6.0 and TOEFL iBT in the low seventies, but no official conversion exists. Every equivalence you find is CEFR-mediated and approximate.
