TOEIC.ai card: free TOEIC practice test, all 7 parts graded

Overview

A TOEIC Listening & Reading total of 785 lands you near 72 on TOEFL iBT, because ETS maps both scores to CEFR B2. That is how every score conversion between the two tests works: you route each score through the CEFR. ETS publishes no official one-to-one table, so each row on this page is an unofficial estimate built from ETS's own mappings, with the A2 row starting at the ETS minimum of 225. The page runs in this order.

Is TOEFL Equivalent to TOEIC?

No, no TOEIC score is formally equivalent to a TOEFL iBT score. ETS makes both tests, but it doesn't publish an official TOEIC-to-TOEFL conversion.

The reason is what each test measures. TOEIC Listening & Reading tests workplace English in two skills on a 10-990 scale. TOEFL iBT tests academic English in four skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

The only defensible bridge is the CEFR. ETS publishes a separate CEFR mapping for each test, so any chart that links the two directly is an estimate built on that shared reference.

There is a practical limit too. A university that asks for TOEFL iBT will rarely accept a TOEIC score in its place, so a conversion tells you your level without replacing the required test.

How Do You Convert TOEIC Scores to TOEFL iBT?

You find the CEFR level your TOEIC Listening & Reading total reaches, then read the TOEFL iBT range ETS maps to that level. The result is a score band, not a single number.

A conversion calculator runs the same lookup, so its output is only as reliable as the CEFR tables behind it. Check each section score as well. ETS sets separate Listening and Reading minimums for every CEFR level, and its own mapping table advises reading the two sections separately rather than relying on the total alone.

Three lookups and one caveat turn a TOEIC total into a TOEFL iBT range.

  1. Check the TOEIC total and both section scores. Note your TOEIC total score with the Listening and Reading figures, since the level depends on all three.
  2. Find the CEFR level all three reach. Your level is the highest one where the total, Listening and Reading each clear the ETS minimum.
  3. Read the TOEFL iBT range for that CEFR level. Take the matching TOEFL iBT range from the ETS table, for example 72-94 on the 0-120 scale at B2.
  4. Treat the result as an estimate, not an equivalence. No admissions office accepts a converted number, so use it to judge readiness before you book a test.

What Does the TOEIC to TOEFL iBT Conversion Chart Show?

The conversion chart lines up TOEIC Listening & Reading totals with TOEFL iBT scores by CEFR level, from 945-990 against 95-113 at C1 down to 225-545 against scores below 42 at A2.

The A2 row starts at the ETS minimum of 225 (110 Listening plus 115 Reading), not the 275 many shared charts show. The legacy TOEFL iBT scale has no A2 mapping, so that cell says "below B1." The 1-6 band column is the scale ETS introduced on January 21, 2026, though many institutions still quote the 0-120 scale. A saved PDF works, but this table is the version we keep current.

Each CEFR level gives one range on each test, and every row is an unofficial estimate.

CEFR level TOEIC Listening & Reading total TOEFL iBT (0-120) TOEFL iBT (1-6 band)
C1945-99095-1135-5.5

B1550-78042-713-3.5
A2225-545Below B1 (under 42)2-2.5

ETS places TOEFL iBT 114 and above at C2, a level TOEIC Listening & Reading doesn't map. On the ETS concordance a 1-6 band of 3 starts at 44, so a legacy 42 or 43 sits on the B1 border.

How Do TOEFL iBT Scores Compare to the CEFR?

ETS maps legacy TOEFL iBT totals to the CEFR at 42 for B1, 72 for B2 and 95 for C1, with 114 marking C2, and the 1-6 scale reports CEFR-aligned bands directly.

On the 1-6 band scale every CEFR level covers two half-band steps: 3 and 3.5 are B1, 4 and 4.5 are B2, 5 and 5.5 are C1. ETS publishes a score concordance so institutions can compare a new band with an old total on the 0-120 scale. That concordance pairs a band of 5 with 95 and above, so a TOEFL iBT 95 lines up with a 5. TOEFL ITP and TOEFL Essentials carry their own CEFR mappings, so this chart doesn't transfer to them.

The TOEIC side of every level is in our TOEIC to CEFR table.

ETS sets these CEFR thresholds on both TOEFL iBT scales.

How Do TOEIC and TOEFL iBT Section Scores Compare?

Only Listening and Reading compare directly, because TOEIC Listening & Reading has no Speaking or Writing section. The productive skills need the separate TOEIC Speaking & Writing tests, which ETS maps to the CEFR on their own 0-200 scale.

ETS sets a TOEIC section minimum of 275 Listening and 275 Reading for B1, 400 and 385 for B2, and 490 and 455 for C1. TOEFL iBT's legacy section minimums sit beside them on a 0-30 scale.

Take a 480 Listening section and a 310 Reading section: the 790 total is B2, yet that Reading section score is only B1. In practice the uneven profile usually runs this way, with Listening ahead, so check the Reading section first. For Speaking and Writing, a TOEIC Speaking & Writing score is your only TOEIC evidence at any CEFR level.

How Do TOEIC and TOEFL iBT Scores Compare With IELTS?

IELTS joins the same chart through the CEFR: the IELTS partners place bands 4.0-5.0 at B1, 5.5-6.5 at B2 and 7.0-8.0 at C1.

ETS also publishes its own TOEFL iBT and IELTS score comparison for institutions, which is closer than any TOEIC link. It doesn't match the CEFR route exactly: ETS pairs IELTS 7 with a TOEFL iBT 94, one point under the C1 mark. If you want a TOEFL-to-IELTS calculator, use that ETS table. If you hold a TOEIC score, read the IELTS band score column as a level estimate.

For TOEIC to IELTS directly, see our TOEIC vs IELTS comparison. Our TOEIC vs TOEFL vs IELTS guide compares all three tests on format and cost.

Adding IELTS gives three scores for each CEFR level, from B2 upward the levels most requirements name.

What Are the Key Differences Between TOEIC and TOEFL iBT?

Four differences explain why the scores never match exactly: what each test measures, how many skills it scores, the score scale, and who asks for it.

The full comparison of format, length, fees and preparation sits on our TOEIC vs TOEFL page, so this list keeps to what affects conversion.

  • Test content - workplace versus academic English: TOEIC uses meetings, emails and notices, while TOEFL iBT uses lectures, campus conversations and academic reading passages.
  • Skills scored - two versus four: TOEIC Listening & Reading is a multiple-choice test of two skills, while TOEFL iBT also scores Speaking and Writing.
  • Score scale - 10-990 versus 0-120 or 1-6: TOEIC reports in 5-point steps up to 990, while TOEFL iBT reports half bands from 1 to 6 alongside 0-120.
  • Purpose - employers versus university admissions: Employers and promotion schemes ask for TOEIC, while TOEFL iBT serves university admissions in English-speaking countries and some visa routes.

Which Is Harder, the TOEFL or the TOEIC?

TOEFL iBT is generally considered harder, because it adds Speaking and Writing tasks and uses academic texts, while TOEIC Listening & Reading is multiple-choice and uses everyday business English.

"Harder" still depends on you. Someone who works in English but has never written an academic essay will find TOEFL iBT's integrated tasks, which ask you to read, listen and then respond, the tougher hurdle. A student used to lectures may find TOEIC's pace and business vocabulary the real challenge.

Difficulty doesn't move the CEFR mapping, though. A B2 on either test is the same CEFR level, which is why the chart stays valid even though the two tests feel different on the day. The full difficulty comparison is on our TOEIC vs TOEFL page.

When Should You Choose TOEIC or TOEFL iBT?

Choose by the institution or employer that will read your score, not by which number converts better.

Universities and visa routes usually name TOEFL iBT or IELTS, while employers, promotion schemes and many business schools name TOEIC. The wording of the score requirement decides the test. A conversion tells you whether you're ready, but it never substitutes for the test the requirement names. The questions below cover readiness once you know which test applies.

The reader of your score usually settles the choice.

  • University admission abroad - TOEFL iBT: Admissions offices in English-speaking countries list TOEFL iBT or IELTS, and they rarely accept TOEIC in its place.
  • Job application or promotion - TOEIC Listening & Reading: Employers usually write an employer requirement as a TOEIC total, sometimes with a minimum for each section.
  • Employer that needs spoken English proof - TOEIC Speaking & Writing: Roles involving calls or client meetings ask for TOEIC Speaking & Writing, scored separately on a 0-200 scale.
  • Requirement written as a CEFR level - either test that reaches it: A requirement stated as B2 or C1 lets either test qualify, provided your score clears that level.

Which TOEFL Score Is Equivalent to B2?

The TOEFL scores equivalent to B2 run from 72 to 94 on the legacy 0-120 scale, which corresponds to a band of 4 to 4.5 on the 1-6 scale.

On the TOEIC side, B2 runs from 785 to 940 on TOEIC Listening & Reading, so TOEIC and TOEFL iBT sit side by side at that CEFR level. An institution that writes its requirement as "B2" will often accept either test. Our TOEIC to CEFR guide holds the full TOEIC table for every level.

Is an 830 TOEIC Score Good?

Yes, an 830 TOEIC score is good: it sits in the CEFR B2 band, above the 785 total that ETS maps to B2.

On the CEFR chart, 830 converts to a TOEFL iBT estimate in the 72-94 range. It's still 115 points short of the 945 that marks C1, so it won't support a C1-level TOEFL claim. Our guide to the TOEIC 800 score covers what this band means to employers.

Is 97 a Good Score in TOEFL iBT?

Yes, 97 is a good TOEFL iBT score: it is above the 95 minimum ETS maps to CEFR C1.

The TOEIC Listening & Reading range at the same level is 945-990, which shows how demanding the equivalent is. On the 1-6 scale, 97 corresponds to a band of 5. A 97 clears many university minimum requirements, but each university sets its own, so check the exact figure your program publishes.

Can You Switch From TOEIC to TOEFL?

Yes, you can switch from TOEIC to TOEFL iBT, but your TOEIC score does not carry over, so you sit the full TOEFL iBT and prepare for its Speaking and Writing sections.

There is no score transfer between the tests. Before test registration, use the conversion chart to see which TOEFL iBT range your current level points to. Our TOEIC vs TOEFL comparison covers the format, timing and preparation differences, including the Speaking section and Writing section you'll add.

How Can a TOEIC Practice Test Show Your Current Level?

The most reliable way to find your current level before converting is a full-length, timed TOEIC practice test, because it gives you a total and both section scores to place on the CEFR chart.

Under timed conditions you get section scores that reflect real pacing. Find your CEFR level first, then read across to the TOEFL iBT range. A TOEIC practice test gives an estimated score, not an official ETS result, so any conversion built on it is an estimate of an estimate.

Common Questions

Is TOEFL equivalent to TOEIC?

No. ETS makes both tests but publishes no official TOEIC-to-TOEFL conversion. The two can only be compared through the CEFR, which ETS maps for each test separately.

How do you convert TOEIC scores to TOEFL iBT?

Find the CEFR level your TOEIC Listening & Reading total and both section scores reach, then read the TOEFL iBT range ETS maps to that level. The result is an unofficial estimate, not an equivalence.

Which TOEFL score is equivalent to B2?

B2 runs from 72 to 94 on the legacy TOEFL iBT 0-120 scale, a band of 4 to 4.5 on the 1-6 scale. On TOEIC Listening & Reading, B2 runs from 785 to 940.

Is an 830 TOEIC score good?

Yes. 830 sits in the CEFR B2 band, above the 785 total ETS maps to B2, and converts to a TOEFL iBT estimate of 72-94.

Is 97 a good score in TOEFL iBT?

Yes. 97 is above the 95 minimum ETS maps to CEFR C1 and corresponds to a band of 5 on the 1-6 scale. Check the exact minimum each university publishes.
